How to leave your dream job.

Okay, Here’s the Thing

In October of 2018, I gave my notice. We made an announcement to the whole agency. I was leaving Mintz + Hoke. Tears were shed. And I then went back to my workspace and continued to work. For nearly six months.

During that time, I participated in the process of finding and hiring my replacement. I was part of the search team. I scanned resumes and portfolios. Interviewed candidates for my own job. Awkward? Yeah, well, there’s no getting around that. And this week, we found the person who will take over after I’m gone.

I have been the CD at Mintz + Hoke for over five years. Before that, I was a senior writer at the agency. Before that, I was a freelance writer at Mintz + Hoke and other agencies. My history with this firm goes back to 1991 when Mintz + Hoke made an offer to buy my Boston ad firm, LS&S. That’s a lifetime of history. A lifetime of relationships. And more work than I can get my head around.

Why am I leaving?

First, let’s get the obvious assumptions out of the way: I’m not suffering from a terminal illness. I’m not going to rehab. And I have not made any sexually inappropriate comments or actions in the workplace. Sorry to eliminate the potentially juicy gossip from all of your lives.

Further, I’m not unhappy with the job. In fact, I love what I do and I love the people I work…
